Workshop Overview

Description

This session supports educators in examining how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can be used to better serve gifted and twice exceptional learners  without relying on extra assignments or loosely aligned enrichment. Participants will explore how UDL helps teachers anticipate barriers that gifted and twice exceptional learners  may encounter, including limited challenge, lack of relevance, or restricted opportunities for agency. The session emphasizes the importance of ensuring that tasks and extensions truly measure intended learning rather than compliance, speed, or volume. Educators will examine how purposeful choice can be leveraged to deepen thinking and increase student agency. Participants will leave with practical strategies for designing learning experiences that challenge gifted and twice exceptional learners while remaining inclusive and coherent within Tier 1 instruction.

Objectives

  • Explore how UDL can support highly capable learners through increased challenge, relevance, and learner agency within core instruction.
  • Evaluate whether tasks, extensions, and enrichment opportunities align to intended learning goals and promote deeper thinking.
  • Identify strategies for designing rigorous, inclusive learning experiences that provide appropriate challenge without creating separate or parallel learning tracks.
