Description

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) are distinct frameworks, but both aim to create inclusive, empowering learning environments where all students can thrive. While UDL emphasizes proactive, flexible design, it also supports emotional regulation, identity development, and self-direction - core components of SEL. This session explores how UDL and SEL intersect at the levels of design, neuroscience, and practice, with practical examples that show how addressing social-emotional barriers can increase access to rigorous academic goals.

Objectives

  • Explain how UDL and SEL frameworks align to support academic, social, and emotional development.
  • Identify common social-emotional barriers that impact learning and explore design strategies to reduce them.
  • Analyze lesson and environment examples that integrate UDL and SEL to promote belonging, self-awareness, and learner agency.
