Description

Our students and their families must feel welcome and honored in our learning environments in order to feel safe and thrive. How can we go beyond "back to school night" and monthly newsletters to engage our families and ensure they feel they have a place in our learning environments? Through this session, we will dive into barriers that prevent families from engaging in their child's education and explore strategies for creating more welcoming spaces where our families feel heard and valued.

Objectives

  • Identify common barriers that prevent families from engaging in traditional school structures.
  • Explain the difference between family involvement, engagement in school, and engagement with schooling.
  • Explore strategies for designing more inclusive, culturally responsive family and community engagement practices.
