Melissa Toland, M.Ed. is a passionate UDL advocate with a strong belief in the power of universal design to transform education for all learners. As a secondary classroom teacher, Melissa successfully integrated the principles of UDL to design learning experiences for diverse learners. Melissa has extensive knowledge and expertise in utilizing technology to universally design instruction, and enhance learning experiences for all students in the areas of language arts, english language development, and journalism.

In her current position, Melissa supports district-wide UDL implementation through professional development trainings, and instructional coaching. The professional development presentations she develops are rooted in the UDL guidelines, providing teachers with a model of universal design and the opportunity to experience the power of UDL as a participant. Melissa developed the UDL Implementation Rubric as a professional development tool to encourage teachers to self-assess and monitor their own learning as they strive to meet the needs of all students through universally designed instruction.

As an instructional coach, Melissa mentors teachers on a one-to-one and small group basis at both the elementary and secondary levels to support teachers as they implement UDL principles into their teaching practice. Through these collaborative sessions, she provides a practical approach to integrate the principles of UDL in their instruction. Melissa’s work as both an instructional coach and UDL presenter has successfully fostered an understanding of the fundamental concepts of UDL and its capacity to create better learning opportunities for all students throughout her district.
