Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

Professional Development Session

Building a Strong Multi-Tiered System of Support

A Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) is an essential component to building inclusivity and equity and can act as a cornerstone to school improvement. A strong MTSS requires us to consider how we lead, share responsibility, collaborate, build community, provide professional learning, choose high-quality curriculum, allocate resources, and more. It also requires us to provide an accessible Tier 1 education for all learners. Simply put, we cannot intervention our way out of a weak Tier 1 foundation.  Through this session, we will explore what  MTSS is and what it is not and cover how to universally design Tier 1 so that more learners can access and succeed in the general education classroom. We will explore the concepts of variability and barriers in education, both in the classroom and systems level, and dive into how Universal Design for Learning can provide a framework that increases accessibility, equity,  and inclusivity in school systems.
