Coaching and Supporting UDL Implementation

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that recognizes all learners are varied and provides flexibility in design to optimize learning outcomes. As instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and/or administrators, it is our job to support educators as they work towards fully implementing UDL into their practice. Instructional leaders and coaches play an important role in this work because we support, encourage, and motivate educators as they integrate UDL in their classrooms and schools.

Participants in this course will explore the UDL Guidelines and take a deep dive into the implementation of UDL, focusing on creating innovative learning environments for teachers that can be scaled to improve the outcomes of all students within the district, developing PLC’s rooted in UDL, supporting the work in classrooms, and staying true to a vision of UDL.

Melissa Toland, M.Ed. is a passionate UDL advocate with extensive knowledge and expertise in utilizing technology to universally design instruction, and enhance learning experiences for all students in the areas of language arts, english language development, and journalism. In her current position, Melissa supports district-wide UDL implementation through professional development trainings, and instructional coaching. As a secondary classroom teacher, Melissa successfully integrated the principles of UDL to design learning experiences for diverse learners. Melissa developed the UDL Implementation Rubric as a professional development tool to encourage teachers to self-assess and monitor their own learning as they strive to meet the needs of all students through universally designed instruction.

What to Expect

Facilitated

Eight online learning modules containing videos, resources, and weekly assignments and/or discussions.
Direct interaction and feedback from your instructor and the opportunity to build community with your classmates through course discussion boards.
Lots of options and choices - UDL is at the foundation of everything we do.
Participants will be expected to pass in work by the due date, but will also be given the opportunity to revise and improve upon their work (just as students in their class should be given the same respect using the UDL framework).
All assignments can be resubmitted for feedback and grading up until the last day of the course.

The fee listed above covers your course registration with Novak Educational Cosulting, Inc. only. You may also choose to purchase graduate credits or clock hours (for Washington State teachers) at the time of registration. Bulk discounts are available on registration fees for groups of 3 or more. Course Certificates & Transcripts

As long as you receive a grade of C or better, you will receive a completion certificate from Novak Education at the conclusion of the course. Please check in with your school or district to determine if this alone will be sufficient for salary points or advancement. Some states require additional proof of completion such as clock hours, contact hours, or credits. Graduate credits (3 continuing education credits) may be obtained through our university partner. I really liked all of the different options we had to complete our work. I especially liked having the option to do interactive remote calls and to be able to collaborate with other educators. I was even able to connect with educators from other countries. I thought it was really nice to be able to hear different perspectives from others.

Melissa was so engaging and really positive. I appreciated her feedback. I also loved how the course modeled UDL for us - I've never seen it modeled before so I really appreciated actually seeing it, instead of the usual "you need to use UDL" without any instructions on how.
