How Accommodations Help All Students Access Grade Level Content

As we say in Universal Design for Learning, what is necessary for some is good for all.

Accommodations and scaffolds aren’t just for students receiving special education services. Accommodations can make learning accessible for all students. Accommodations are about providing an environment and scaffolds that support growth and meet students where they are.

A great visual representation to help understand accommodations is with these short TikTok videos from @TheYeeetBaby. Check them out below (and we dare you to try not to smile!).

With Accommodations (Accessible!)

The example above is just one example of how to help your peers understand how to embed scaffolds and accommodations into lesson and assessment design using the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). My colleague Maggie Moriarty and I created a faculty meeting protocol and presentation to share that will help to administer a 1-hour faculty meeting or professional learning community (PLC) on learning design. It was created with the intention to help educators better understand how to incorporate accommodations and scaffolds to improve outcomes for all learners!
